Additional buildings constructed on campus were partially demolished when major reconstruction was undertaken in to comply with earthquake standards.

Construction has started on the new Library. Paly remained the only Palo Alto high school until Elwood P.

Cubberley opened in the fall of with students. Four years later, Cubberley had its peak attendance of students. Henry M. Gunn High School opened in In recent years the senior high schools have again become four-year schools. Local news of the day tells us that our girls were active in The Suffrage Movement. After a delay because of the influenza epidemic, the current Paly campus opened officially on December 24, The community was impressed with the school's auditorium - unique at a time when even Stanford had none - and the high-ceilinged library doubled as a ballroom.

When the present Palo Alto High School was built in , some townsfolk were critical of a location so far out of town. The original photograph of this momentous occasion is hanging in the Tower Hallway --see below.

The Student Betterment Committee was organized to improve the school grounds, and other student clubs flourished. Nine faculty members and nearly boys wore overalls every day for a time. The community continued to grow. Subdivisions sprang up south of Embarcadero Road bringing thousands of new families to Palo Alto schools.

The Elwood P. Cubberly and Henry M. Gunn High Schools were built. Paly is undergoing major remodeling leaving only the Tower Building and the Theater of the original campus. Since its opening, Paly has gone through many changes with traditions, culture, architecture and academics.

Many Paly alumni are still in Palo Alto today and shared their perspectives on these changes with The Campanile. Sherwin Wong, a Paly graduate of the year , and now the mother of a Paly student, said she experienced many different traditions during her time in high school, including Spirit Week Senior Cut Day and the senior class prank. While the traditions Wong mentioned are all still seen at Paly today, the International Festival, another tradition Wong remembers, is no longer around.

During this event, students gathered together and celebrated different cultures that made up Paly. In addition to the International festival, there are more discontinued other events that Christa Brown , Paly graduate of the year and current administrative assistant to the principal, also has fond memories of.

For example, Brown was part of Black Scholars United, and every year during Black History Month, the group would dress up and have poetry, singing, dancing and stepping, a form of dance in which the participants body is used as an instrument in order to produce complex rhythms and sounds through footsteps, words, and claps.

While Brown said she is not sure why this changed, she hopes to one day see this tradition revived and continued. When Kaci was in high school, students used to drive cars to Prom instead of taking busses as they do currently. Kaci is more fond of this current method.

The two entrances to the Administration Building and the entrance to the Auditorium are ornamented with terra cotta arches, columns and colonnettes, and scrolled parapets. Where the roof of the Theatre crosses that of the Auditorium, there is an octagonal cupola. The designers received a medal award for their plans from the Southern California Chapter, American Institute of Architects. Significance: The location and size of these structures give them particular importance as the visual focal point of the more recent buildings in the high school complex.

The Mediterranean qualities of the original buildings also help relate them to the architecture of Stanford University and to the widespread city popularity of Spanish Colonial revival design. The school was dedicated on December 24, , with a grand march of students and faculty from the first city high school at the corner of Channing Avenue and Webster street.

In supplementary buildings were added and the original structures were reinforced to provide earthquake safety by Birge M.
